Three years after sparking a global conversation about mental health in sports, Simone Biles has put her words into practice at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The gymnastics superstar has prioritized her mental well-being, attending therapy sessions before crucial competitions, including the women’s team and all-around finals.
Biles’ journey to mental wellness hasn’t been easy. She withdrew from the Tokyo 2020 team final due to a case of the “twisties,” a phenomenon where the body and mind fall out of sync. This experience led her to confront years of unresolved trauma, including abuse by the former U.S. team doctor.
Through therapy and self-care, Biles has overcome doubts and online criticism, regaining her confidence and athleticism.
Her three Olympic gold medals in Paris are a testament to her hard work and dedication to mental health.
“The negative comments, they’re painful, but they’re really quiet now,” Biles said, reflecting on her journey. “After all these years of putting the mental work in, it’s paid off.” For Simone Biles, this triumph is worth more than gold.
